Out this weekend: Sucker Punch

I went to an advanced screening of Sucker Punch last night. Though the trailer made the film look visually stunning, I had a feeling it would be all flash and no substance. Unfortunately I was correct.

Emily Browning plays a girl named ‘Baby Doll’ whose mom dies. What started as a strong storyline as Baby Doll inherits her mom’s money and is sent by her uncle (who got nothing) to live in a glorified brothel, falls flat as the film progresses.

While at the brothel, Baby Doll apparently has this super sexy ‘dance,’ which is so amazingly sultry that men become hypnotized by her moves!

Not that the audience ever got to see this super-dance.

Because of this, I have decided that her dance was most likely a mash-up between ‘the robot’ and ‘the moonwalk’ with the obvious grand finish being ‘The Freddy’

…Yup, SEXY!

The plot unravels as the cheese factor rises. I literally almost fell out of my seat with the finishing monologue because I rolled my eyes so hard.

The thing was, this film could have been great if they stuck to the revenge theme that I thought it was following for the first half. The fantasy fight scenes were extremely arty, detailed and action packed and the music rocked. If the writing had been better, the characters more gritty and they stuck to the revenge theme it would have been hands down one of the best films I’ve seen this year.

Unfortunately, not even the plot twists at the end could overcome the epically over-the-top fluff that spewed out at every opportunity.
